Kahm Yeast and Surface Film: What That Layer on the Water Means
A shiny, oily layer on the water surface can look alarming, but it usually is not dangerous. Understanding what causes it, and how to clear it, will save you worry. Here is what to know about the film on your shrimp tank.
What You Are Seeing
Surface film is a thin layer of proteins, oils, and bacteria that collects where water meets air. It often appears in tanks with low surface movement or heavy feeding. Sometimes it looks like a dusty or oily sheen that breaks up when touched.
Common Causes
Overfeeding is a leading factor, because extra nutrients feed the bacteria that form the film. Decaying plant matter, certain foods, and fish or shrimp oils can contribute. A tank with a perfectly still surface lets the film accumulate.
Is It Harmful?
In most cases, surface film is not directly harmful to shrimp. It can reduce gas exchange, though, and it may signal that nutrients are building up. If the film is thick, it deserves attention.
Easy Ways to Remove It
Increase surface agitation with a gentle outflow or an air stone, and the film will break up. You can also lay a sheet of paper towel across the surface for a moment and lift it off. Skimmers designed for small tanks work well too.
Prevention Habits
Feed smaller portions and remove leftovers after a few hours. Keep up with regular water changes and trim dying plant leaves. Aim for a ripple at the surface rather than a mirror finish.
Watch for Changes
If the film returns quickly, look more closely at feeding and filtration. A fuzzy white layer that looks different from a simple sheen could be something else, so keep an eye on it. When in doubt, test the water and observe your shrimp.
Is It Film or Something Else?
True surface film breaks apart when poked and swirls back together. Fuzzy white clumps or slimy threads that stay attached may be fungus or bacterial growth on food or plants. Remove the source, and the problem usually fades.
Skimmers and Surface Movement
Small hang-on skimmers or a gentle filter outflow can keep the surface clear with almost no effort. Position them where they will not create a strong current for shrimp.
A Clean Surface, a Clear Mind
A little attention keeps the surface clean and the water well oxygenated. When your tank is looking its best, you can look through our freshwater shrimp for sale and welcome new members.
