Water Parameters Every Shrimp Keeper Should Know
Why Parameters Matter So Much
Unlike many fish, dwarf shrimp lack the physiological buffer to handle sudden shifts in water chemistry. A parameter swing that a betta barely notices can trigger a mass molt failure or die-off in a shrimp colony. Understanding the numbers behind your tank is the single best thing you can do for long-term success.
pH and General Hardness
Most Neocaridina thrive in a pH range of 6.5 to 8, while Caridina species generally prefer 6.2 to 6.8. General hardness (GH) affects how easily shrimp absorb minerals needed for their exoskeleton, while carbonate hardness (KH) buffers pH swings. Test both, not just pH alone, since a “correct” pH with no buffering capacity can crash overnight.
Temperature and Oxygen
Shrimp generally do best between 68 and 78°F. Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen and speeds up shrimp metabolism, which can shorten lifespan and stress a colony over time. A gentle sponge filter that agitates the surface helps maintain oxygen levels without creating dangerous currents for tiny shrimplets.
TDS: The Overlooked Metric
Total dissolved solids (TDS) gives you a quick snapshot of overall mineral content and is especially useful when remineralizing RO water for Caridina species. Many experienced keepers target a specific TDS range for their species and adjust with mineral supplements rather than relying on tap water alone.
Testing Tools Worth Owning
A liquid-based master test kit is far more accurate over time than test strips, which tend to degrade with humidity exposure and can be harder to read precisely. A dedicated TDS meter and a GH/KH test kit round out the toolkit for anyone serious about maintaining Caridina or other sensitive species long term.
How Often to Test
Weekly testing is a reasonable baseline for an established, stable tank, while new setups, recent water changes, or any sign of stress in the colony warrant daily checks until things settle. Keeping a simple log of readings over time makes it much easier to spot slow drifts in parameters before they become a crisis.
Adjusting Parameters Gradually
If your tap water doesn’t naturally match your target species, adjustments should always happen slowly, over days or weeks rather than all at once. Sudden swings, even toward a “better” number, can shock a colony just as badly as leaving parameters at an unsuitable baseline.
Testing Before You Buy
Before shopping for aquarium shrimp for sale, test your existing water and compare it to the needs of the species you’re considering. Matching parameters up front prevents the slow, frustrating decline that happens when a colony is fighting its environment instead of thriving in it.
